Fad diets come and go, there’s no denying that. However, there are fad diets, and there’s the Ketogenic Diet. I’ll be telling you why you should try Keto if you have any fitness goals for this summer, or anytime throughout the year. As a diet that’s been around since the 20s, millions of people have tried it and experienced massive success. I’m actually a part of that list, I’ve done some good to my body by going on Keto. Today’s article, I’m telling you why you should at least try Keto, and what you can expect. Let’s get started!

What Is Keto?

Before hopping into all the details about Keto, we need to know what the Ketogenic Diet is. The Ketogenic Diet is a way of eating that substantially cuts down on your carbohydrate intake to maximize fat loss. But how does this happen?

Our body’s first source of energy when it comes to anything is our reservoir of carbohydrates. They keep us going, and once they run out, we switch to another source of energy. What’s next in line is out stores of fats. We begin to run off the fat that we’ve accumulated on our bodies.

The state in which our bodies begin to run off fat instead of carbs is called ketosis, where the name Keto Diet comes from. Ketones begin to form in the liver and are sent into the bloodstream from the fat usage.

The reduction in carbs makes a lot of sense when trying to achieve ketosis. If you have no carbs to run off, your body will begin to use fat for energy. This was the logic used in 1921, and it still holds up as one of the most popular diets to ever exist.

Keto Benefits

After discussing the basics of the Ketogenic diet, I’d like to begin with a wide variety of benefits it has to offer. I’ll talk about my experience with Keto in a later section, but starting out, I honestly didn’t know about some of these benefits which now, I’m even more thankful for.

Fat Loss

Probably the main and primary reason why people hop on a Ketogenic Diet is to lose weight. Reaching ketosis is an extremely effective state to burn loads of fat, especially when you’re exercising.

In the mix of ketosis, your metabolism’s speed increases while your appetite decreases. Your metabolism turns food into energy even faster, and your hunger takes a backseat as hunger-stimulating hormones are suppressed.

Lower Cancer Risks 

One benefit that I certainly was not aware of was the benefit of having risks of cancer being lowered. A study conducted by some researches found out that our beloved Ketogenic Diet lowers the risks of insulin complications.

This makes sense since reducing carbohydrate intake lowers your blood sugar. Insulin is the hormone that controls blood sugar that has shown to be linked to various cancers with your health. The research on Keto with cancer is still very limited, and more and more research surfaces up every day.

Reduced Acne 

An improvement in the clarity of your skin has also been documented when on Ketogenic Diet. The main reason behind this is because of the decrease in the consumption of sugar, a common refined carbohydrate that causes acne.

Sugar and refined carbohydrates cause blood sugar to fluctuate, which can significantly affect your skin’s health. Maybe young adults, including me, venture off into a Keto diet to stop acne from surfacing on their skin with great success.

Lower Blood Pressure 

High blood pressure is a huge factor in many diseases that we face, such as heart disease and stroke. Low-carb diets like Keto lower blood pressure effectively, reducing the chances of you catching a disease.

Keto & Intermittent Fasting

Although the Ketogenic Diet and intermittent fasting are two completely separate things, they go together like bread and butter. I, and millions of others, have paired the diet and eating pattern to achieve maximum success with Keto.

Intermittent fasting to put it briefly is an eating pattern that revolves around an eating and fasting window. The goal is to have a long fasting period, and a shorter eating period to prompt weight loss. Typical fasting times are around 16 hours, and eating times are about 8 hours.

That may seem like a long time without eating. However, the way you schedule your fast is how you win at IF. You could potentially sleep off 8 hours of fasting if you plan your fast accordingly at night, maybe even longer, which I personally stick to.

The eating pattern works incredibly well with Keto and low-carb diets because of the complete carb reduction. Instead of limiting carbs, you cut out carbs completely for 16 hours, giving your body plenty of time and resources to achieve ketosis.

My Experience With The Keto Diet

It’s time to tell you guys about my experience and, not to mention, my success with the ketogenic diet. However, I can’t give all the credit to Keto. Intermittent fasting also deserves about half the praise since that’s what has been keeping me in shape all these years.

I started Keto the summer of my sophomore year in high school, a long way back. I was tired of being what you might call chubby and wanted to look slimmer coming back in my junior year. Wanting to impress all my friends and leave their faces in shock.

It wasn’t easy, let me tell you. It’s a cliche saying but a true one. Working out and exercising almost every day while staying away from carbs was the goal that summer. When it was all said and done coming back for the 1st day of school, I couldn’t have been happier.

My body was miles different, fat in my face, neck, chest, and especially stomach was reduced entirely. I didn’t have a six-pack for say, still working on that, but I did have a very nice build and frame from working out all that summer. Then, the best part; the compliments started flowing in.

People noticing your transformation relieve you by knowing that all your effort was not in vain. In my sophomore year, I weighed in at about 215lbs at 5’11, coming back junior year in about 2 ½ months, I was at a whopping 183lbs. That’s a 30lbs difference, mostly fat at that.

If you’re contemplating starting a keto diet, by all means, try it. Attempt it and persevere because results don’t happen overnight. Don’t be afraid to mix in intermittent fasting; also, I highly recommend combining the two for maximum results.


In conclusion, why should you try Keto? The benefits alone are something that can entice anyway to begin a low-carb journey. From fat loss to acne prevention to lower blood pressure and even to decreasing the risks of cancer. There’s a lot to gain from Keto. Not only does Keto do well on its own, but intermittent fasting should also be in your arsenal. The duo is an unstoppable combo that will help you achieve almost any weight goal.
