Why You Need An Omega-3 Supplement | Healthy Fats

Healthy Fats

Why you need an omega-3 supplement? It’s no secret that in the average adult diet, many vital nutrients are lacking or nonexistent. One of those is healthy fats, a nutrient that helps both our brain and heart. There’s a lot of other nutrients that are just as important as omega-3, but this is a good place to start. Today’s article, I’m explaining why the nutrient omega-3 and supplements are important in your diet. In the end, I’ll even recommend an Omega-3 fatty acid supplement that I’ve personally tried and enjoyed!

What is Omega-3?

Before jumping right in, we need to know exactly what Omega-3 is before discussing its supplements. Omega-3 is short for omega-3 fatty acids, a kind of fat found in human bodies and animals.

The fatty acid is found in a variety of foods, such as fish, shellfish, walnuts, algae, and nut oils. It is also found in supplements you buy at the store, of course. Three types of omega-3 fatty acids are found in the foods we eat.

Omega-3 EPA/DHA

Our omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA for short, and omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid, DHA for shortare long-tailed fatty acids. These fatty acids can be found in common seafood like fish and shellfish.

Both EPAs and DHAs are considered long-chain fatty acids to their molecular structure. In both these fatty acids, their carbon atom count is over 20. EPA being at 20 carbon atoms and DHA having 22.

Omega-3 ALA

For our omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid or ALA for short, these are considered our short-tailed fatty acids. As EPA/DHA is found in seafood, ALA can be found in plants, such as flaxseeds and chia seeds.

The majority of the research done on omega-3 is primarily done on the long-chained fatty acids, those being EPA and DHA. This is why not as many benefits have been found in short-tailed fatty acids than long-tail acids.

Why You Need Omega-3s

Typically, the supplements that contain omega-3 that you find in stores or online will be made from fish oils. Meaning they will contain the long-tailed fatty acids since they come from seafood instead of short-tailed ones.

There are a lot of benefits when taking omega-3s, especially for your brain and heart. However, there are also a handful of drawbacks that come with the omega-3 supplement. Benefits from the supplements include…

  • Lower Blood Pressure
  • Reduce the likelihood of heart attack/stroke
  • Reduce triglycerides amount
  • Improve memory
  • Anti-inflammatory functions

Omega-3 fatty acids’ main focus is on the heart and brain’s function, providing anti-inflammatory factors for both. Studies have shown that these fatty acids show improvement in mental health concerning depression.

The fatty acids have effects related to serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for regulating your mood, and its receptors. Tons of research has been conducted on omega-3s, and every day is something new with them.

Omega-3 Supplement Drawbacks

When taking omega-3 fish supplements, there are a couple drawbacks you should know about and look out for. The benefits may be very helpful for your brain and heart, but some other aspects of your body may fare some side effects.

It is recommended that you take no more than 3 grams of fish oil daily, that dosage is deemed safe. Taking more than 3 grams puts your health at unknown risk and should be observed by your doctor. Side effects include…

  • Fishy Breath
  • Fishy Aftertaste
  • Upset Stomach
  • Nausea

As you can see, a majority of the side effects have to do with the fatty acid from fish. The omega-3s may give you a fishy breath or taste in your mouth after consumption. However, the supplement I have here smacked that side effect back were it came from.

Optimum Nutrition Fish Oil Softgels

Why You Need An Omega-3 Supplement | Healthy Fats

I’ve been trying this supplement by Optimum Nutrition for about almost a year, and its there omega-3 fish oil soft gels. I take one right every day, and thankfully, ON has manufactured it in a way to prevent fishy breath.

I have no fear of talking to people and worrying about having fishy breaths to disturb their nostrils. There is no fishy taste in my mouth even after burping, which is fantastic. I can’t say the same about other omega-3 supplements, unfortunately.

To be fair, I do eat fish as it is during the week, so I don’t even need fish supplements for omega-3 fatty acids. However, some weeks I’m not up for fish, so I go ahead and pop the omega-3 supplement.
