Both EPAs and DHAs are considered long-chain fatty acids to their molecular structure. In both these fatty acids, their carbon atom count is over 20. EPA being at 20 carbon atoms and DHA having 22.

For our omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid or ALA for short, these are considered our short-tailed fatty acids. As EPA/DHA is found in seafood, ALA can be found in plants, such as flaxseeds and chia seeds.

The majority of the research done on omega-3 is primarily done on the long-chained fatty acids, those being EPA and DHA. This is why not as many benefits have been found in short-tailed fatty acids than long-tail acids.

Typically, the supplements that contain omega-3 that you find in stores or online will be made from fish oils. Meaning they will contain the long-tailed fatty acids since they come from seafood instead of short-tailed ones.

I have no fear of talking to people and worrying about having fishy breaths to disturb their nostrils. There is no fishy taste in my mouth even after burping, which is fantastic. I can’t say the same about other omega-3 supplements, unfortunately.
