The dietary supplement industry is jammed packed with different types of things for people to consume to help reach their goals. Two of the most popular ones are none other than meal replacement and protein shakes. These two shakes are staples among consumers all throughout. They are used for a variety of reasons that some people wouldn’t even think of. However, they’re both lovely and all, but which one stands as the better supplement? Is there one I should prioritize taking instead of the other? In this article, I’ll fill you in on the supplement that has the upper hand and why.
What’s A Meal Replacement Shake?
Taking a look out our first supplement, it shouldn’t be too hard to define or understand what a meal replacement shake is. To keep it simple, a meal replacement shake does precisely that, replaces one, or two, of the meals you eat a day. You could down one of these shakes instead of taking the time to prepare yourself dinner or breakfast and expect the same nutrients. Take a good hard look at everything there is on the nutrition label. The top half portion seems to be in order, filling up with many nutrients. The bottom half is where it starts to expand with its vitamins and minerals. If you can recognize all the vitamins/minerals listed on the nutrition label of Vega One’s All-in-One shake, props to you. There’s a reason why there are so many nutrients in this shake. It’s supposed to replace an entire meal. When you eat dinner, you’re supposed to be fitting in all those nutrients every day.
How true that is to the population is up in there. I know some friends who eat Top Ramen Noodles for dinner and pretend like that’s not causing detrimental damage to their bodies. There’s a reason why “junk food” is called “junk food” because it’s junk when it comes to nutritional value. It provides little to no value nutrition-wise. However, I shouldn’t jump to conclusions when judging people’s living conditions without opening their entire book. With the shake, however, it’s the literal definition of nutrition.
What’s A Protein Shake?
Protein powders and shakes are more my territory, supplements that provide your body with extra protein. These are the shakes that individuals like bodybuilders and athletes take to increase their performances in their respective criteria. Unlike a meal replacement shake, a protein shake only focuses on one macronutrient, and it’s in the name. With little other nutrients to provide, protein is what the shake excels at. On average, you can expect a protein shake to give around 20 – 30 grams of protein per scoop, which is solid. Take a look at this protein powder, which happens to be my personal favorite. As you can see, Bodybuilding.com’s Signature Whey Protein provides you with 25 grams of protein, right smack in the middle of the average. Other than that, there’s not a whole lot that really stands out within protein powders. The fats are kept to a minimum, along with the carbohydrates and even the calories. The shakes are designed for protein and not much else. However, this lack of existing macronutrients doesn’t make protein powders subordinate to meal replacement shakes.
The low carbs in protein powder can be utilized in different sorts of diet, such as the Ketogenic diet. The key to the ketogenic or keto diet is to get to the metabolic state of ketosis. The state where fat burns instead of carbs. If you keep eating carbs, you’ll never reach this state of fat burning since you’ll be stacked on carbohydrates. Who’s The Best?
We’ve finally reached the point where we pair the two together and decide who really has the upper hand. So meal replacement and protein shakes, who’s the winner? Well, it’s all a matter of preference. That may sound very clique, but it’s very true. It depends on how your style of living is primarily. What I mean by that is the way you eat throughout the day. If you’re a very busy person with not much actual time to make yourself some grub, a meal replacement shake is for you. It makes sure that you get all your essential nutrients without going to different of preparing your food.
However, a meal replacement shake will never match the fantastic taste of the actual food prepared for eating. Not to say that there aren’t any good tasting meal replacement shakes out there, but try comparing the flavor of that with a juicy steak. You’re right, you can’t. Or how about putting the shake-up against a big juicy burger. They both may taste good, but one holds a better taste value than the other. Just know that you’re sacrificing flavor for nutrients with a meal replacement shake.
If you’re someone who eats a normal three meals a day and are just looking for added protein to get in their diet, protein shakes should be on your radar. A meal replacement shake provides protein, along with a whole bunch of other nutrients that you’re not necessarily looking for. If all you want is protein, then take a protein shake. It could help you build muscle, burn fat, or spark your metabolism.
In conclusion, who’s the winner between meal replacement and protein shakes? I’m going to claim it as a tie. They both provide very crucial benefits for specific types of peoples. For the busy people, grab a meal replacement shake, for pretty much anyone else, chug down your protein shakes. They both do have protein but have got other things in store.
