There are supplements out there that are designed to help you build muscle, like protein shakes. But do protein shakes make you gain weight? This is an excellent question to be asked for anyone wanting to take a protein powder supplement to put on lean muscle. That’s the goal, to get lean, not get chubby. In this article, I’d like to discuss if chugging down a protein shake a day can actually lead to fat gain. You’d be surprised to what I’m going to reveal to stay tune.

What Is a Protein Shake?

You may have heard of protein powder or protein shakes, but do you actually have a good enough grasp of them to understand them? If you don’t, it’s okay, even some self-proclaimed “weight lifters” don’t understand protein powders. Don’t worry, you guys have me to keep you all informed. A protein shake/supplement is a supplement that boosts the amount of protein you eat/drink a day.

A supplement, by definition, is something that enhances something else by adding an element or surplus to it. In the case of protein powder, the powder enhances the amount of protein you consume in a day. There are many purposes to which people utilize protein powder in their lives, and there’s no wrong way to use it. The whole point of the supplement is to help you achieve your goal, whatever that may be. Here’s a list of common goals people have when using protein powder

  • Building Muscle
  • Feeling Fuller
  • Improve Strength
  • Improve Athletic Performance
  • Maintain Muscle

Do Protein Shakes Rack Up Pounds?

To answer this plain and simple, the answer is no. This is coming from a situation where you drink a protein shake once a day. Protein powders are meager calories in terms of scoops, many just aren’t calorie-packed. There’s a whole other type of protein powder that is designed to specifically make you gain weight called mass gainers. If you’d like to know more about mass gainers, click on this article I made explaining the properties of mass gainers.

However, that’s not to say that drinking a whole bunch of protein shakes a day won’t cause you to gain weight, it’s unlikely, but not impossible. Scoops of protein may not be all that calorie-dense, but too much of something is always bad for you, let alone supplements. Remember, protein shakes are supplements; they’re are meant to enhance something, not be the basis. Make sure you focus on whole foods for your protein and leave supplements to add that last extra boost to your diet.

Protein Shakes Do The Exact Opposite

As a matter of fact, protein shakes are a supplement to complete many purposes like the ones I mentioned above, but I left one out until now. I’d like to emphasize that protein shakes are also a means to lose fat believe it or not. This is all possible due to the nature of protein itself, the macronutrient is one the most interesting in terms of its possibilities. Little to be known by the people, protein is the most filling macronutrient us humans can consume.

Due to its very filling nature, protein powders can make you very full fast. This feeling of satiation causes people to eat less calories since their bellies are full, causing them to burn more calories than they consume. This is why you see a lot of athletes trying to stay lean, drinking protein shakes to keep themselves full and burn fat. Not to mention, more protein leads to a boost in your metabolism. Do Protein Shakes Make You Gain Weight? -

During my sophomore year in high school, I remembered the doctor told me I weighed almost 220 lbs only at 5’11’. I knew it was time for a change, so I set that summer for a change in my lifestyle. My brother bought me a protein powder, link to it here, and I put myself on an eating pattern called intermittent fasting. This double combo helped me to drop to 183 lbs by the end of summer, and I was looking good. Through the work of the protein powder, I was fuller faster and limited my calorie amount. Not to discredit intermittent fasting, I love it so much I still use it.

In conclusion, protein powder does not make you gain weight, but it makes you lose weight instead. It’s a great weapon to have in your arsenal if you’re looking to get lean, especially for this up and coming summer.
