Do They Flop?
A question that everyone who’s heard of a protein powder or multivitamin they like is, “are supplements worth it?” If you think you’re alone with this, think again. Supplements are a new creation that hasn’t been around for all that long. Everyday new research and studies are formulated in order to maximize the capabilities of supplements.
We still don’t know everything about supplements. However, this isn’t to say that with what we do know, everything is bad. Supplements are common for a reason, and in today’s article, I’ll be discussing if these dietary buddies are worth it. Let’s get started.
What Is a Supplement?
Let’s jump right in by giving the term “dietary supplement,” a definition. Breaking the word into two, dietary is anything relating to one’s diet, pretty self-explanatory. The word supplement refers to anything that enhances or adds an extra element to something. So a dietary supplement is anything that enhances your diet, simple. However, the amount of dietary supplements out there is not simple. There are so many to choose from that come in all shapes and sizes and do a plethora of things to your body.

I won’t be going over each individual supplement, respectively, since they deserve their own separate article. However, I will be explaining how supplements can be beneficial as a whole and consequential in some aspects.
Why Take A Supplement
There are many reasons why someone might start taking supplements for their diet. With plenty of benefits sprout with that decision. I have here a couple reasons why you might want to start taking a supplement.
As the best help supplements could give you, the convenience they provide is unmatched. I like to use protein powders for my example. Four eggs have about 25 grams of protein, which is great. The time it takes to make eggs isn’t great, however.
Although it might not take forever to make eggs, 15 minutes max, it can’t hold a candle to the time it takes to prepare a protein shake. Unless you drink the eggs raw like Rocky Balboa, supplement convenience will always top any cooked meal.
This is especially true when you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to cook something. Let’s say you wake up late in the morning and have to leave the house in the blink of an eye. There’s no way you’re cooking something unless you made it the night before, and you’re taking it without.
In this situation, the protein powder is the best choice. One scoop in the cup, close it, seal it, and you’re out the door. You’ll still get the same amount of protein as the eggs with a smaller calorie amount too. I personally recommended this protein powder right here, the #1 protein supplement, in my opinion.
Supplements could be utilized to fix “minor issues” in your diet. I put emphasis on minor issues because if you’re strongly deficient in one nutrient, it’s best to have an entire diet change rather than a subtle supplement addition.
If you’re lacking fish or seafood in your diet, an omega-3 fish oil supplement will do nicely. Any nutrients in supplements can be found in everyday foods we eat, just for your information.
Taking a supplement is a quick fix for some issues in one’s diet. It isn’t going to build the beach-bod you’ve wanted or slim you down for a six-pack, but it can definitely help. Supplements aren’t the foundation, your diet is.
Why Not Take a Supplement
Supplements can be really beneficial to the well being of your health. There are plenty to choose from that help in their own ways. However, there’s one reason why some people might shy away from supplements.
Costs Add Up
Supplements can be quite expensive if you don’t know where to look for them. If you’re using more than one often, you’ll need to keep replacing them constantly. A protein powder, multivitamin, pre-workout all typically last 1-2 months if used cautiously.
The expense of buying supplements isn’t for everyone. If you’re serious about your goal and have no other means of acquiring said nutrient, go for it. If you can wait or have other ways of getting those needed nutrients, you can pass up on it.
My Take On Supplements
Now it’s time for the section all about me, as selfish as that sounds. I’ve been taking supplements ever since I was about 16 in high school. Did I know about the controversy, dangers, of benefits of supplements back then?
Of course not. Not a clue. My older brothers suggested I take it so I could actually start “building muscle.” They weren’t all that educated on supplements either, but people grow and learn for a reason.
The supplement I used back then and still use to this day is a protein powder. After my workouts, I take it not to magically build muscle, build to reach my protein intake goal. Going back to convenience, it’s a quick and easy way to get high-quality protein in a flash.
Should you take them? I say yes, only if you really want to achieve whatever goal you’re striving for. Now, do you actually need them? Not at all, nutrients can be found everywhere else, but the convenience is unmatched with our beloved supplements.
In conclusion, are supplements worth it? I’d say so. They provide our bodies with nutrients and vitamins that some of us most desperately need. They offer quick-fix solutions to some diets while enhancing others. They can be expensive at times, but if you’re willing to put the time, money, and effort into the goal you’re trying to achieve, I’d say you deserve a supplement.
