The purpose of a protein supplement is to enhance/increase your protein intake for the day. For most protein powders, a scoop adds about 20-30 grams of protein into your body. That’s a pretty substantial amount, considering how easy they are to prepare. But where does the protein exactly go after you consume it? And how does the protein affect your overall body in the long run?

Let’s start at the beginning when you drink the thing. Once into your mouth, down your esophagus, and into your stomach, things start going down. Acids in your stomach rough up the protein shake to the point that only the building blocks of protein remain; amino acids. It’s not the actual protein that travels around your body, it’s the amino acids. However, once you are left with amino acids in your stomach, your brain is ready to use them. Not for itself, but for the rest of your body. How do your amino acids move from your stomach to the rest of your body? Your amino acids hitch a ride on your bloodstream to circulate all across your body. Here are a couple of things they do to your body.

Build Muscle 

Probably the most common purpose protein powder is advertised for its the building of muscle. On most powder ads, you’ll see a ripped huge guy holding a shake claiming that if you take a sip of their shake, you’ll look like him. He’s not lying, for the most part. A protein shake adds a decent amount of protein to your diet, the key to building muscle. Of course, there’s a lot more that goes into becoming ripped, but drinking a protein shake is a start.

When you hit the great workout session, your muscle tissues/fibers tear and get damaged. This sounds like a bad thing, but this is exactly what you want. After being torn up, your fibers get the opportunity to repair and grow bigger, hence, bigger muscles. The tissues don’t fix themselves, they need amino acids to do the job. After a good night’s rest, your amino acids build your muscles larger.

Support Bones

Protein helps another aspect of structure in your body; one being muscles, and the other being bones. Dietary protein, the protein you eat in your diet, provides your bones with the nutrients it needs to function correctly. A common disease your bones are afflicted by is osteoporosis, basically meaning your bones are brittle and weak. A high protein intake has shown, through studies, that bones get more durable and prevent osteoporosis. The density of the bones changes and stops them from being brittle and weak.

Decrease Hunger

Little do people know, protein is the most filling macronutrient of them all. We have a hormone in our body that regulates our hunger, it’s called ghrelin. This hormone releases our bodies are ravenously hungry. Our stomach releases the hormone to tell our brain that it needs something to eat. It has shown that protein suppresses ghrelin for a more extended period when compared to other macronutrients, fat, and carbohydrates. Foods that provide protein, chicken, steak, fish, protein shakes, will fill you up faster and longer.

Protein On Your Kidneys

The organ that regulates any excess waste and extra fluid is your kidney. Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that are no bigger than your fists. They may be pretty small, but big things come in small packages. Your kidney filters about 200 quarts of blood each day and about 2 quarts of urine. When you consume a lot of protein, there will be excess for your kidneys to regulate.

This is a common concern for many people wanting to drink protein but fear for the health of their kidneys. This is a fair concern to have. You may have two kidneys as it is, but you value them with your life, literally. The truth is, unless your kidneys already have problems, you won’t be getting any from drinking protein powder. The large amounts of protein damage withered kidneys, it’s too much to filter out as waste. If your kidneys have no existing problems, they’ll be fine regulating the protein coming in it.

False Labeling

There’s a trend going around found by researches analyzing a protein power. The trend claims that manufacturers lie about their ingredients. Some ingredients go unlabeled on the packaging but are still put in the final powder. It wouldn’t be such an issue if the ingredients were harmless, but they aren’t. Some of them are dangerous and raise concerns as to why some companies would put those certain ingredients in powders. Now, consumers don’t trust what manufacturers put on their bottles for ingredients.


In conclusion, are protein shakes good for you? I will most definitely say yes. The pros outweigh the cons in this scenario, with how many benefits they provide. The cons are something to look out for, but the pros are nice in what they do your body as a whole. I have a great review on a protein powder that I personally recommend since I drink it myself.
