The answer is simple; no…if used accordingly. There you have it, the properties of protein shakes are not built to make you rack up some pounds. However, there is still but the slightest chance that you could gain weight from a protein shake. The chances are so minimal, that I just classify it has to have no effect on you gaining weight. Here are two reasons why gaining weight from protein shakes is just too difficult, even if you tried.

Out of all the fabulous things I can point out here, we’re focusing on the calories for now. The serving size is one scoop, and they’re 130 calories per scoop. According to, and just about every researcher studying nutrition, most humans should be eating around 2,000 calories a day. It varies a lot, but it’s just a good rough estimate to use, especially for this article. So doing some calculations, you’d have to drink about 15 protein to reach your caloric limit for the day. Do you know how many shakes people drink a day on average? One. Maybe two.

The calories are just not enough to pose as a fat gaining threat. There do exist protein powders that are specifically designed to make you gain weight. Those bad boys are called mass gainers. This isn’t known by that many people, so for you, the reader, you can find something you learned home with you. Protein is the most filling macronutrient we have at our disposal. No other nutrient, nor carbs, nor fats, have that same filling factor-like protein. Consuming protein suppresses a hormone produced by our stomach called ghrelin. Ghrelin is a hormone that basically tells your brain you could eat an ox that you’re ravenously hungry. The hormone is silent when you eat protein, causing you to feel full and fast.

Since we’re talking about protein, a supplement that’s job is to literally to give protein above all else, it’s no wonder you feel full after downing your shake. The 25 grams of protein fill a good portion of your stomach and stops ghrelin from ever poking its ugly little head to alert your brain. If 25 grams of protein isn’t enough, some protein supplements provide even more that, some as high as 30 grams.

Since it’s been proven that protein shakes and powders are not prone to make you gain weight, there’s another question at hand. Can it do the opposite, can it make you lose weight? While no miracle tool can make you lose weight, protein shakes can surely help in achieving that goal. Boost Metabolism 

The consumption of protein entering our bodies does boost the rate of what our metabolisms move at. Our metabolism is responsible for turning the food that you eat into energy. The speed at which you make this change differs for everybody. For some people, the metabolism in their body is turned to overdrive, and it burns through food instantly. What does that mean? It means that whatever they eat, instantly, is burned into energy, and doesn’t stay on their body. They accumulate very little bits of fat and are most likely skinny. I know what you’re thinking, “I can eat anything and not gain fat? What a blessing!”

However, let’s look at this from the perspective of someone who’s looking to gain muscle. They’ll need to eat much more to gain weight, maybe even twice as much. These people are known as hard gainers. But we’re not going to talk about these folks, we’re discussing the people who are the complete opposite. Individuals who have slower metabolisms, who have a hard time shedding off fat, can really benefit from a protein shake. It speeds up metabolism so that you may shed off weight. This may require more effort on your part, but incorporating a proper workout regime can do you wonders. Especially putting resistance training in your training can improve your physique by a lot, in more ways than you can imagine. In this case, with protein shakes, a high amount of drinks may lead to a gain in weight, as you might expect. I mentioned before that it requires a lot of shakes to be consumed to start noticing some real weight gain. In conclusion, are protein shakes fattening? No, they actually do the opposite of getting fat, they make you slimmer. They have factors in them that make it hard for you to gain weight, like being low in calories and having filling factors. These make it impossible to gain weight, and it also makes it a candidate for a tool to help you lose weight. The boost in metabolism and the opportunity to build muscle makes it much easier to slim down.
